I have had a life-long love of the arts, visual and performing. Nothing thrilled me more as a child than to lose myself in a painting,

whether it was at the Nelson Atkins Gallery in Kansas City or in the two somewhat primitive waterscapes painted by an unknown relative that hung above the kitchen table in my grandparent’s home — two circular paintings in the inside bottom of pie plates. My most wished for Christmas present was in 1962 when I was 12 years old, a Learn to Draw with John Gnagy book and drawing supplies. I watched Gnagy a self-taught artist, work his magic on his television instruction every chance I could.

I tucked all my explorations into a tiny pocket of my life while I pursued “real” career opportunities.

My choices seemed to be: housewife, secretary, nurse, or teacher. Yes, I grew up in the 50’s and 60”s. I didn’t seem to realize that there were other options out there but always managed to find a way to express myself in artistic terms within my narrow self-imposed track. I didn’t start pursing painting until after I had painted just about everything in my house that stood still. I began my study in 1983. I studied with local artists, Kent Wallis and Adrian Van Suchtelen, and California artist, Rom Villa. Most of my art career was spent studying and promoting others’ work, as well as my own, both as a Director for the Alliance for the Arts and in Greystone Gallery, which I co-owned for 18 years with glass artist, Shean Jezak.

I have spent much of my time the past 18 years with surface design, fiber art, and photography.

I pursued these as hobbies while I worked for the local Chamber of Commerce and then as director of a business resource center in the valley, helping others start their own businesses, along with economic development work for local and regional governments. Both the art world and helping others in business have been my passion.

I recently returned to painting with oils and pastels. I realized how hungry I was to paint again. I was drawn into the landscapes before me in this beautiful valley with its ongoing dance of light and movement over time. My daily drives to and from work or my visits to my children and their families provide challenges for me to keep my eyes on the road. I definitely prefer to be the passenger. My husband was very patient with me while pulling over to take one more photo. Every excursion gives me a new perspective on the very familiar scenes before me. I am a lucky lady!
